You-Can Toucan
At Glenfall, we have adopted the Growth Mindset philosophy as a whole school policy. The children understand the idea of the You-Can Toucan and understand that to learn, we have to keep trying and learn from our mistakes. This philosophy is embedded in all classes across the school and has been shared with parents. At Glenfall we use Growth Mindset praise and encourage children that mistakes help us to learn. The children have embraced the Power of Yet! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLeUvZvuvAs
Growth Mindset is the idea from Professor Carol Dweck, the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Dweck has conducted a lifetime’s research into mindsets and established an opposition between a fixed mindset (the belief that intelligence is fixed) and a growth mindset (the belief that intelligence can grow).
At Glenfall, we no longer refer to children as Gifted and Talented but as High Starters. There are many opportunities for curriculum enrichment at Glenfall: Rotary and Nature Quiz, Chess Club, Sports, Music, Drama and Dance as well as mastery in curriculum areas.
