Our topic this half term is:

Literacy

This half term in literacy we will begin with a focus on phonics to prepare for the Phonics Screening Check, before moving into our pirate theme where the children explore rhyme, rhythm and performance through poetry and creative language work. Our visit to the Farm Park helps the children practise recount writing, using clear sentences and time words to retell real events. Later in the term, we dive into The Pirates Next Door, using the story to develop vocabulary, prediction, character and setting description, and an understanding of formal and informal language. We finish the half term by planning, writing and editing our own adventure stories, bringing together all the skills weโ€™ve been building.

Spelling tests will take place once a week on a Friday.

Maths

In Maths this half term, the children are building their confidence across number, calculation and measurement. We begin by strengthening key skills such as doubling, halving and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, before exploring early multiplication and division. The children then apply their learning to realโ€‘life contexts, including recognising and using coins and notes, and comparing, ordering and measuring mass and capacity using both nonโ€‘standard and standard units.

Science

In Science this half term, the children are exploring the changes we see in summer and carrying out a range of handsโ€‘on investigations. They begin by observing the signs of summer at Forest School, before learning about summer weather and recording daily changes across the week. The children then revisit the four seasons, thinking about how daylight changes throughout the year, and later take part in practical experiments such as making slime and testing floating pirate ships. To Year 1, we will also be welcoming some very special caterpillar visitors into the classroom so the children can observe their life cycle up close.

Here is our overview for this term’s theme –
